Us, in our daily lives and our sometimes thoughtful moments, and us in our larger environment. The image is unabashedly beautiful, even if not easy to make sense of. A sense of sublimity, in the 19th century sense of that term, permeates.
This image was developed over a long period. Several of the elements -- photos and drawings -- were done in 2000 and 2001, and were used in compositions then. I extracted and re-used some of these elements for a preliminary version of this piece in about 2008. Unsatisfied with that composition, it lay dormant until late 2010, when I conceived the idea of the background imagery, thus finally completing the composition.
The image is printed on canvas in two panels. Each half is mounted onto board, and the two halves joined together to form the final image object. The final can be disassembled and reassembled for shipping or packing. Total weight of the assembled piece is about six pounds.
