Field Trip

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
& other works

Print out and bring with you the Artworks List of several large-scale artworks that we will look at. We will meet at 53rd and Lexington Ave, SE corner, at 2:00 PM on the day of our visit.

Bring a camera and a sketchbook. As you look at the artwork, take photographs (if allowed) of any work that is of interest to you. Also make notes and/or sketches of thoughts or observations you have as you look at the work.

We will begin by looking together at two publicly sited artworks. After that we will proceed to MOMA. Make sure you have your Pratt ID with you, as that will give you free admission to the museum. Inside MOMA we will then look together -- briefly -- at each of the artworks I have selected. Make notes and sketches as we do so.

After looking at all the artworks together, you should select one artwork to focus on. This may be one of the ones on my list, or it may be some other large-scale artwork of interest to you in the museum. Go to that artwork and spend at least 30 minutes looking at it and making notes and sketches about your thoughts. Do NOT walk away before 30 minutes. Keep looking, keep noticing, keep thinking -- for a minimum of 30 minutes. (If it is a very good artwork and you are thinking very hard, you could easily spend an hour before it.)

By the end of the day this Friday, assemble your notes, sketches, and/or photos and put them onto your blog page for this course. Do this before the end of Friday. This is so that the other students will have time over the weekend to look at what you posted.

Additionally, write a 3-4 page paper of about the one artwork you chose to focus on. Include illustrations or sketches as appropriate. Put your paper into PDF format and post it to your blog. This must be done before the start of our next class on Monday.

Reminder: The Museum of Modern Art offers free admission to Pratt students, so bring your Pratt ID card.
