Project #1

Due 8th session, October 18

The first imaging project of the semester may be of or about anything you wish, but you must discuss your ideas with me and the rest of the class and get approval from me on the nature of your project before you begin. Think in terms of extending your art practice. Try to avoid doing the same thing you have always been doing (probably very well). Consider this an opportunity to experiment, to change, to advance. You will, of course, build on what you have done in the past, but try to avoid working "in a rut".

Also, think in terms of our readings and discussions about Derrida's concept of the parergon and "framing". You are not required to incorporate these ideas into your project, but you are strongly encouraged to consider them as you work.

Your art project may involve whatever media or combination of media you choose. Whatever medium you choose to work in, however, the primary focus of this project must be still imagery and your project must include at least one high-quality physical print as an integral part of the artwork.

* All students must do their own printing. You may not pay someone or have a service bureau do your printing for you.
* You may print at either the Pratt Digital Output Center (DOC) in the Engineering building, or in our own DDA Imaging Lab on the fifth floor of Myrte Hall.
* You may use any of the substrates available in either the DOC or our Imaging Lab.
* In choosing your substrate, think of what is appropriate for your project.
* The size of your printed imagery should also be appropriate for your project.

As you work, make entries in your blog -- of your thoughts, sketches, tests. As you progress through the project, also begin to develop in your blog a short artist's statement of what you were attempting in this project. (See the link on my Pratt webite for help with developing an Artist's Statement.)

On the final due date:

* Bring in any physical prints or other physical materials that are part of your project.
* Post to your blog your Artist Statement for this artwork.
* Also post to your blog a representative sample of images to show the final artwork of your project.
* Hand in to me a DVD or CD data disk that contains all relevant imaging files, plus a PDF file of your Artist Statement. Organize all your files on the disk so that it is easy for me to find them and understand what they are.
