Studies of a woman's face

While taking a photo of my partner at a public garden, this young woman and her friend happened to be at the edge of the frame. While her friend busied herself setting up her camera, the young woman sat quietly behind her, gazing off into space and thinking who knows what. My goal in doing these studies was to try to understand what it is about the subtleties of a face -- shapes, contours, swells, hollows, proportions -- that cause us to think it beautiful. Sketches below were based on the accidental photo at the garden.

Judging from her facial features and complexion, she was probably from southeast Asia. The text above is in the Denavagari script used for Sanskrit.
