Design and Fabrication Process
The compositions begin digitally in a three-dimensional software package. The polygonal forms created there are unwrapped with another software into flat patterns which are printed, along with their image textures, onto paper. The paper prints are assembled to form a small preliminary paper model corresponding to the virtual digital model. The process iterates between paper models and virtual models until the composition is satisfactory.
The digital data can then be scaled up to the full intended size (approximately 9' tall) and the flat patterns, along with high resolution versions of their imagery, printed at this full size on paper. Each full-size paper print is glued to a sheet of foamboard, which is then cut into the shape of each facet of the sculpture. The edges of the foamboard facets are beveled according to angles calculated in the software. The facets are then attached together edge-to-edge to build up the final form. For dis-assembly, the facets are detached and packed and stored flat.
The floor imagery would be printed commercially on durable, non-slip vinyl. It can be rolled for storage.
