Portrait of Daniel
Porcelain, lifesize
(c) 1975 Michael O'Rourke. Edition of four

This lifesize porcelain bust was intended to capture the beauty, innocence and vulnerability of little children. The modeling was done from life in plastilene, an oil-based clay. The subject was two years old at the time, and sittings required having his mother hold him in her lap and read to him as I worked.

Once the original plastilene model was completed, I made a plaster "piece" mold in 20+ pieces. Liquid porcelain slip was poured into this mold, removed, the porcelain clay carefully fired at the extremely high temperatures required to produce porcelain. An edition of four copies of the bust was produced.
