"Mountain" Sculptures

2020-2021

The "Mountain" sculpture designs seen here are intended as large-scale multimedia sculptures fabricated of heavyweight paper and board printed with imagery. The sculptures include video, audio, and animation and are intended to be displayed outdoors against a backdrop of mountains. The works question the anthropocentric distinctions we make between nature and our human cultures and technologies. Imagery and sounds of natural environments and the surrounding mountains are combined with those of urban environments and human society, and merged in such a way as to make distinguishing one from the other difficult. The printed paper is crumpled and twisted, making it yet more difficult to "understand", "read", or separate out the imagery.

The final artworks are to be displayed outdoors against a backdrop of mountains. Because of its impermanent materials, the artwork is gradually reclaimed by the same environment that helped make it beautiful. Weather and the elements destroy the artwork. The paper and board collapse and deteriorate, the multimedia components fail and cease to function. The artwork returns to the raw materials from which it was painstakingly fabricated.
